But then again, I\u2019d hardly want my little corner of tranquillity to be suddenly taken over by the tourist mobs either \u2013 a bit of a catch 22 really. But anyway, I\u2019m writing this now for the sake of anyone that\u2019s ever found themselves in the area and wondered what exactly goes on behind the confines of whatever transport hub it is that you\u2019ve ended up at. Those that know the town will swear by its reputation for producing some of the finest food, wine and other local produce anywhere in France \u2013 chances are the gourmet bites you\u2019ll be feasting on in Val Thorens came from here in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>A dream for foodies to say the least therefore and the perfect place to gorge on <strong>goats cheese, fondue, crepes and the best pastries you ever taste in your life<\/strong>. And even if skiing isn\u2019t on the cards, there\u2019s a thousand and one <strong>activities<\/strong> on offer just a spit and a throw from Chambery, including rock climbing, hiking, horse riding and boating\u2026not to mention trips around some of France\u2019s most important vineyards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.alps2alps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-258 lazyload\" alt=\"Chambery-La Fontaine-des Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.alps2alps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" data-srcset=\"http:\/\/testwp.alps2alps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog.jpg 375w, http:\/\/testwp.alps2alps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog-225x300.jpg 225w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 375px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 375\/500;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-258\" alt=\"Chambery-La Fontaine-des Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.alps2alps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/testwp.alps2alps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog.jpg 375w, http:\/\/testwp.alps2alps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Chambery-La-Fontaine-des-Elephants-Alps2Alps-Blog-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>In the town itself, probably the most famous and most photographed landmark of all is <strong>La Fontaine des Elephants<\/strong> \u2013 which unsurprisingly translates as the \u2018Elephant Fountain\u2019. Not that the locals seemed to be content with such a simply moniker, so don\u2019t be surprised to hear those from the locality referring to it as the \u2018Four Buttless\u2019, which makes sense when you see it.<\/p>\n<p>Another hugely important building is the <strong>Chateau de Chambery<\/strong>, which now exists as a government building but was once the home of the legendary Shroud of Turin.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s tough to single out one or two locations as the best places to head for shopping and general relaxation, but the good news is that most of Chambery is small and compact enough to get around on foot in just a single day. That being said, <strong>Lac du Bourget is one of the best and most popular places<\/strong> to head when the weather takes a positive turn, where you can hire out a paddle boat and drift away from the cares of the real world for next to nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you\u2019re getting the picture here \u2013 this is a place that has so much to offer and yet is overlooked entirely by the majority of French Alps visitors every single year for one reason or another.
