From freestyle snowboarding like the Big Air, to the traditional slalom, winter sports can boast many exciting events.<\/p>\n

Ahead of International Women\u2019s Day, we\u2019re shining a spotlight on women in winter sports.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a closer look at the ladies of the slopes.<\/p>\n

History of Women and Winter Sports<\/h2>\n

Women have a complex background in winter sports. These days, women are tearing up the slopes \u2013breaking records left, right and centre.<\/p>\n

But, the story used to be very different.<\/p>\n

In the first Winter Olympics in 1924, women weren\u2019t allowed to participate. For a long time, skiing was considered \u2018masculine\u2019 \u2013 women\u2019s organs were too fragile to take part.<\/p>\n

Even after they were included in the games, it took 90 years for women\u2019s ski jumping to make it to the Olympics<\/a>. This event wasn\u2019t included in the Winter Olympics until 2014!<\/p>\n

But, skiing has since moved on from the days of being male-dominated. In recent years, the playing field has equalled out, and women have proved themselves to be tough competitors on the slopes.<\/p>\n

This lack of gender gap is just one more reason why we love skiing and snowboarding.<\/p>\n
