Get to know Hintertux Glacier Ski Resort

Hintertux Glacier skiing resort is exceptionally convenient for skiing throughout the year, and it is located in the Zillertal Alps region of Tyrol, Austria. Unlike most ski resorts, which shut down in summer, Hintertux is open all year round because of its year-round skiing on Gefrorene Wand Keeses and Riepenkees glaciers.

Situated in the heart of the mountains and covering a vast area of 227km, the resort offers 24 Alp-marked slopes for downhill skiing, with 59 lifts for beginners and expert skiers without limitations. Slopes vary from gentle to steep and are among the longest in Eastern Tennessee, making them safe for children and families or exciting for professional skiers.

Hintertux is also much more than slopes – it has impressive amenities such as an ice cave – nature’s ice palace – a panoramic terrace at 3,250 meters – and a thermal bath in Fügen. Apart from skiing, those who want to explore other activities within the area can go mountaineering and snowshoeing or even enjoy the alpine views.

Environmental conservation is a core value since most of the activities that are being implemented effectively spearhead the protection of the subalpine bio-physiological production landscape. Regardless of whether one is interested in improving skiing capabilities, the panorama or the fresh mountain atmosphere, Hintertux Glacier offers an extraordinary skiing experience.

Skiing and activities in Hintertux Glacier

Like most other ski resorts, Hintertux is open all year round and offers skiing for everyone on its snow-filled slopes throughout the year. Said glacier is home to quite many runs: 15 blue for easy-going beginners and families, 20 reds for more experienced skiers and 10 black ones for the most daring. Thanks to the unique snow-making installations and natural glaciers, the skiing conditions in this resort are always perfect.

There are 59 lifts connecting the ski area throughout the area of Tux-Finkenberg and offer access to the varying and extensive network of 227 km of ski slopes. The Glacier Bus 3 lift is one of the highest cable cars globally, providing spectacular views of the alpine region and the opportunity to experience and, for the first time, touch almost virgin snow at heights of over 3,250 meters.

Hintertux Glacier skiing: an overview

It also deserves special mention as one of the most popular skiing destinations for those in search of steady snow throughout the year. Positioned at a lower altitude than some alpine resorts, it facilitates the adjustment to the climatic conditions and longer duration of snow conditions on the slopes. To guarantee the presence of a snow layer on its slopes from October to May, the resort has all the necessary facilities so it attracts skiers during the start of the season and at the end of spring.

It also contains facilities for freestyle, such as the Betterpark Hintertux, the highest freestyle park in Austria, which operates from spring to fall and entails inventive designs for various classes of cyclists.

Non-skiing activities in Hintertux Glacier

It is also not only a place for ski tourism but also provides a set of winter activities that have turned Hintertux into a year-round resort. Tourists can walk through the ice caves or take a nature icy tour of the glacier’s interior to see its internal structure. Trekking and snowshoeing are also fashionable. The trails are rather designated and lead to beautiful views of the Zillertal Alps.

Other than skiing, there is paragliding, which gives one a thrilling ride over the mountains if one does not have enough of the slopes. Also, in the resort area, an alpine coaster is available, which is an exciting glide on the snowy mountainside.

Things to do in Hintertux Glacier village

Skiing at the Pillerseetal is followed by the thermal bath at Fügen, which is just a 30-minute drive from the glacier. There are quite a few quiet bars and restaurants at Kühtai, none of which are high-rise and all of which offer après-ski facilities. As is the case for some other ski resorts in Austria, Kühtai has relatively many places to eat that offer an après-ski atmosphere, offering a tyrolean cuisine, refined comfortable and warm.

Family-friendly and kids’ fun in Hintertux Glacier

Hintertux Glacier is equally appropriate for family holidays, as there are many activities suitable for children who ski and also for those who don’t. The Hintertux is an excellent way for kids to learn via fun slopes and characters dotted on the slopes for kids to emulate. The resort also provides babysitting services. Hence, parents can have a good time and be utterly relaxed while children can play and get taught some skills in skiing.

Hintertux Glacier presents the entire mountain experience to families, thrill seekers, and skiing lovers, giving visitors the best experience during their winter vacation.

Top tips for an Alps summer holiday

Before you leave for your alpine summer trip, think about the following points:

  • Prepare for All Weather: Mountain weather can be unpredictable. Packing layers that can accommodate cold, warmth, rain, or shine is crucial.
  • Hiring Guides: For activities like high-altitude trekking or glacier tours, consider booking experienced guides. Early reservations often secure better rates.
  • Fitness Preparation: If your itinerary includes strenuous activities like extensive hiking or climbing, it’s beneficial to improve your stamina and fitness levels before the trip.
  • Communication Preparedness: Mobile reception can be spotty in remote mountain areas. Check the coverage beforehand, and consider carrying a physical map and compass.
  • Advance Bookings: To avoid stress upon arrival, especially during the peak season, book accommodations and popular restaurants in advance.
