Located in the southwest of Switzerland, the car-free resort of Zermatt is renowned for its stunning views of the iconic Matterhorn and boasts over 360 kilometers of pistes, making it one of the most extensive and varied ski areas in the world. For the adventurer, the off-piste terrain is not to be missed.

 

Skiing in Zermatt

Zermatt’s 360 kilometers of pistes make it one of the most extensive and varied ski areas in the world. The resorts high altitude ensures excellent snow conditions from early December to late April. Enjoy perfect skiing every day with excellent snow conditions, thrilling descents and plenty of blue skies. 

Suitable for good skiers, the Swiss ski area is also linked to the Italian resort of Breuil-Cervinia. There are 53 lifts that service the 322km of runs. With 74km of interesting blue slopes, 220km of challenging red and 64km of thrilling black slopes, Zermatt isn’t really the place for beginners as there are no nursery slopes in the valley. But with very little flat slopes, it’s perfect for snowboarders. 

Zermatt’s interesting freeride slopes, heli-skiing and the Gravity Park ensure a challenge for even the most seasoned skier. And did we mention the thrill of skiing down the slopes whilst staring at the Matterhorn?  

Things to do in Zermatt

If you need a break from the slopes, there’s plenty to do. Take a ride on the Gornergrat railway, perfect for snapping those Insta-ready pics of the breathtaking views of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks. Take a stroll through the charming village streets, visit the local shops, and of course, indulge in some cheese and chocolate. It would be rude not to. 

And after a day on the slopes, the apres scene in Zermatt is certainly vibrant and varied. Enjoy a cosy evening in any one of the traditional mountain cafes or head to one of the lively bars and clubs in the village.

Because there is no direct train from Geneva to Zermatt, you have to change in Visp. The train journey as a whole takes around 3 hours and 55 minutes.

The easiest airport to get to Zermatt is Geneva, with its excellent bus  and road links. However, Zurich is a close alternative, with slightly shorter train times.
