Although it has a reputation for being an easy-skiing resort, many experts soon discover how much challenging off-piste terrain there is on the mountain. Most of it is on the northern and southern flanks of the Live 3000 high altitude area and summit and must be skied with a guide.

The best time to ski La Plagne depends on the weather and snow conditions, but generally, you can ski from December to April using the lift system. Early December is a good time for fresh snow, while January and February are usually a safe bet for snowfall and good quality snow.

La Plagne is perfect for beginners, offering a variety of beginner areas and ski-in/ski-out access. Learn to ski and develop quickly into an intermediate skier and beyond in any of the six altitude villages. The resort features several violet-coded runs designed for absolute beginners, complemented by free mini ski lifts to make your skiing experience enjoyable and hassle-free. 

Even though La Plagne has a reputation for being a slightly easier resort in terms of piste riding, there is plenty to keep an advanced skier occupied, with the best area for advanced skiing being the Bellecôte glacier.

La Plagne has some seriously challenging off-piste, often without much hiking involved. Come and make tracks on the “Cul du Nant”, the “Friolin” and the “Mont de la Guerre”, not forgetting the “North Face of Bellecôte, the “Aiguille Rouge.”

Weather and snow conditions permitting, you can usually ski in La Plagne from December to April using the lift system.

La Plagne has a total of 135 pistes with 74 blue pistes, 34 red pistes, eight black pistes and nine green pistes.

The longest piste is the 7km Mont de la Guerre. 

Lifts are open daily from 09:00 to around 17:00 subject to weather conditions and strong winds. Timings for each individual lift can be found on the piste map.

Perhaps the largest ski area in the world, La Plagne unites 11 different villages, and really can offer ‘something for everyone’, offering more than 56,000 beds.

The busiest weeks in La Plagne always coincide with school holidays, around Christmas and the New Year and in mid-February. But careful planning can help you avoid the crowds. 

Because it remains popular with the French, many of whom own apartments on the slopes, prices remain reasonable and food standards high, with no shortage of the mountain diet essentials – good bread, croissants, cheese and cured meats.

Expect to pay between €6-€10 a pint, depending on the bar or restaurant and its location.

The resort lays claim to being the world’s largest, offering more than 56,000 beds.  Accommodation, much of it purpose-built in the 1950s, is spread over 11 separate high-rise estates, scattered across the vast and gentle plateau it is named after. 

La Plagne is relatively easy to get to by car, but you don’t really need your car once you’re in the resort.

La Plagne is super easy to get around, with all of the free inter-village transport, from cable cars to loop bus services. And of course, feel free to ski into Les Arcs with the right ski pass. 

It takes around 10 hours to travel from Geneva to Aime, the nearest train station, by train, over a distance of around 83 km. There are normally 10 trains per day. From the train station, La Plagne is a 20km taxi, transfer or bus ride away. 

A typical transfer from Lyon Airport to La Plagne takes about two and a half hours. However, the journey time can vary based on the season, weather conditions, and road traffic, so it’s advisable to allow some extra time to ensure a smooth trip.

No, Aime la Plagne and Plagne 2000 are distinct areas within the larger La Plagne resort. Often, Aime la Plagne is mistakenly listed on Google as Plagne 2000, which can lead to confusion and result in transfers being booked to Aime Gare Routière instead. It’s important to note that Aime Gare Routière is located at the base of the village, approximately a 35-minute journey from Plagne 2000.

The Mont Blanc ski run holds the title for the longest piste in La Plagne, extending an impressive 7 kilometres. This extensive run is a must-experience for avid skiers and is often considered a bucket list item for those visiting the resort.
