Åre is Sweden’s biggest and best-known resort, with the longest runs in the country and a proper mountain village feel, but most Swedish skiing happens further south around Sälen and Idre, where a cluster of smaller resorts share lift systems and suit families and beginners well. Snow is largely machine-made and reliable from December, and the terrain is gentle rather than dramatic, so this fits a first ski trip or a week with young children better than a search for black runs. Lift passes and rentals both undercut the Alps on price. Alps2Alps runs transfers to Åre, Sälen, Idre, and the rest of Sweden’s ski areas.
